Design Trends Shaping 2026: What Ghana's Top Brands Are Doing

Kinetic typography, maximalist colour blocking, and AI-assisted layout are reshaping graphic design this year. Here's how forward-thinking brands in Ghana are applying them.

2026 marks a genuine inflection point in graphic design. After a decade dominated by flat, minimalist aesthetics (clean grids, restrained palettes, functional sans-serifs), the pendulum is swinging. Brands are demanding more expressive, personality-driven identities. This shift is not a trend cycle; it reflects a broader cultural confidence. Brands in Ghana and across Africa are no longer trying to look international. They are asserting their own voice, and the world is paying attention.

1. Expressive and Variable Typography

Typography is having its most exciting decade in a generation. Variable fonts, typefaces that contain multiple weights, widths and optical sizes in a single file, are enabling dynamic text that responds to context, screen size and even user behaviour. Beyond variable fonts, the dominant typographic mood of 2026 is boldness: oversized headlines that occupy entire compositions, deliberate misalignment as a design element, and fonts with unambiguous personality replacing the generic neo-grotesks that defined the previous decade. For print, this translates to display-weight headlines and generous leading that gives copy room to breathe.

2. Maximalist Colour Blocking

The muted, earth-toned palette of the early 2020s is giving way to intentional maximalism. This is not the garish colour of poor design; it is the confident juxtaposition of bold, considered hues that create visual tension and immediate impact. Ghana's most progressive brand identities are leading this trend, with palette systems that draw on Kente textile traditions, not as pastiche, but as a genuinely Ghanaian design language that has formal rigour and cultural resonance.

3. AI-Assisted Design: Tool, Not Replacement

Artificial intelligence is in every design conversation of 2026, but the most sophisticated studios have arrived at a nuanced position: AI is an exceptionally powerful ideation and iteration tool, and a poor substitute for original creative thinking. We use AI to generate initial compositional variations, to rapidly explore colour system options, and to accelerate the research phase of brand projects. The strategic thinking, cultural sensitivity and craft decisions remain firmly human.

4. Afrocentric Design Languages

The most significant trend for brands operating in Ghana and across the continent is also the most enduring: the emergence of a distinctly African visual language that is confident, rigorous and contemporary. This is not limited to the obvious incorporation of traditional motifs. It extends to the use of local photography talent, Twi and other Ghanaian language copy as primary design elements, and colour systems that reference West African textile and craft traditions without being derivative.

How to Apply These Trends Without Chasing Them

  1. Start with your brand personality: do these trends reinforce who you are, or are you adopting them because they are current?
  2. Test trend elements in contained applications first (for example, a campaign, a seasonal piece, or a social media series) before committing to a full rebrand
  3. Separate durable design decisions from trend-driven ones. Your core brand system should have a lifespan of 5-10 years; your campaign language should be refreshed annually
  4. Brief your designers with cultural direction, not just aesthetic reference. "Bold and colourful" is different from "confident and Ghanaian"
